OUTDOORS

There are abundant opportunities for camping, hiking, biking and other outdoor recreation available in Sevier County. Below are a few of the most popular places to play.

FISH LAKE BASIN - The Fishlake Basin offers numerous camping and hiking opportunities close to Fishlake. Facilities generally include sites with picnic tables, fire rings, water hookups, restrooms, dump stations and garbage bins. The basin campgrounds are open each year from Memorial Day through Labor Day. If you would like to spend a few days at a campground in the Fishlake Basin, please call 1-877-444-6777. Please note that while there are numerous trails surrounding the basin, ATVs are not allowed within the basin.

BIKE TRAILS - Sevier County stretches across three mountain ranges with dirt roads and trails that are available to mountain bikes. High country trails are usually open by mid- May while the lower portions of the trail and some paved roads are open year round. You may also want to join the Central Utah Cyclers on one of their sponsored rides in the area. For more information about their group and upcoming rides, visit their web site at www.centralutahcyclers.com.

RIVER RAFTING - The Sevier River winds its way north past Big Rock Candy Mountain through some beautiful country. Rafting trips are offered through the Big Rock Candy Mountain resort. For more infomration, call 1-866-999-9961 or visit www.candymountainresort.com.

ROUGHING IT - You may want to “rough it” in the outdoors on the beautiful Fishlake National Forest. The Forest is public land and disperse camping is allowed. Please remember to stay on designated trails and routes, be aware of any fire restrictions that may be in place and Leave No Trace when you move on.

HIKING - Opportunities to hike within Sevier County are plentiful. The most popular hiking areas include the mountains above Monroe, Big Rock Candy Mountain located along Highway 89 south of Richfield, and the Fishlake Basin. For visitors who would like to add a Native American flare to a hike, the Fremont Indian State Park south of Richfield along Interstate 70 is perfect.

IN THE SNOW - In an average year, Sevier County is an awesome place to ride snowmobiles, cross country ski or snowshoe. The Fishlake Basin, Monroe Mountain and an area known as the Sand Ledges are the most popular areas to ride snowmobiles. Each of these areas offer both road type riding as well as vast open “play areas”.

In addition to recreation in the snow, Sevier County offers some of the best ice fishing around at Fishlake. Located at an elevation of 8,800 feet with a surface area of 2,600 acres, the lake contains trout of all types and sizes. In fact, trophy lake trout are taken from the lake each year.

For more information about these or other recreational opportunities, please contact Sevier County Tourism office at 1-877-47-Event.
